Editor’s Note

In the previous issue of the DaniReef Column –DaniReef Column| Worth as Much as a Car: The High-Value World of Asian Fishkeepinghttps://en.cipscom.com/ShowNews/25469.htm, Mr. Danilo shared his new insights from the 3rd Asian Clownfish Championship. In this issue, he will present his latest discoveries from large-sized fish competitions.

Large fish (or monster fish) are a highly representative category in China’s ornamental fish industry, with steadily growing attention in recent years. At the China International Pet Show, arowanas, tiger fishes, and stingrays attracted numerous Western aquarium enthusiasts with their unique charm. Due to endangered species protection regulations and strict quarantine policies, arowana and tiger fish are rarely seen in European and American markets. In contrast, stingray, with looser conservation status and legal cross-border circulation, have become one of the most widely traded high-end ornamental fish species worldwide. The varieties bred and improved in China also reach world-class standards.

Through the expo, overseas industry professionals have clearly realized that the value of these ornamental fish goes far beyond their market price; they embody a complete set of mature ornamental fish culture and a sound industrial ecosystem.

Since 2016, CIPS has continuously hosted a variety of professional large fish competitions, promoting the industry through contests, striving to drive the high-quality development of the aquarium industry, and expanding channels for aquarium exchanges between China and abroad.

In 2026, CIPS will celebrate its 30th anniversary, with more exciting competitions to be launched. Stay tuned for updates.

The following is an exclusive report written by Mr. Danilo for CIPS.

Forget the idea of the ordinary common “goldfish”. At CIPS 2025, the Global Goldfish Competition turned Guangzhou into the global hub for the breeding and judging of these cyprinid fish, showcasing specimens whose value and beauty are the result of centuries of Asian selective breeding.

Aquariatech — All the cutting-edge technology you need, in real time

We are talking about one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for ornamental goldfish breeding.

The Video: Full Immersion in the Global Goldfish Competition

Before delving into the technical details of each individual variety, we want to offer you a comprehensive overview that only video can deliver. We have created a special, in-depth montage that lets you “wander” alongside us among the exhibition tanks in Guangzhou.

In these footage clips, you will not only see the award-winning champion fish but also grasp the scale of an event that sets global breeding standards. Take your time to admire them: the graceful glide of Ryukin goldfish, the refined elegance of Oranda, and the regal poise of Ranchu, all best appreciated in their natural aquatic environment as you observe their swimming motion and magnificent body proportions.

Entering the Heart of the Competition

Now that you have witnessed the movement and vivid colours of these premium specimens, let us dive into in-depth analysis. Here are the standout varieties that redefined excellence at CIPS 2025…

Oranda: The “Lions” of the Aquarium

The Oranda family took centre stage, distinguished by their signature fleshy head growth known as a wen. From photos taken at the exhibition, several extraordinary variants stood out:

  • Pom-Pom Oranda: One of the most distinctive varieties, with overgrown nasal growths that form fluffy pom-pom-like protrusions.

  • Bubble Eye Oranda: An extreme morphological crossbreed, featuring the signature fluid-filled eye sacs of Bubble Eye goldfish on a classic Oranda body.

  • Telescope Oranda: Recognisable by their protruding telescope-style eyes, showcased in stunning colour morphs at the show.

Colour Variations: We photographed bicolor, calico (a blend of red, white and black), and extremely rare red-black specimens, where the striking contrast between vivid scarlet and deep jet black determines the fish’s grade and quality.

Ranchu: The King of Goldfish

If the Oranda is the lion, the Ranchu is hailed as the king for its structural elegance. Its defining trait is the complete absence of a dorsal fin and a perfectly arched back, a critical benchmark for competition judging standards.

Standout Ranchu specimens admired at CIPS include:

  • Red Ranchu: A timeless classic, judged on evenly distributed, rich pigmentation across the entire body.

  • Bicolor & Calico Ranchu: Varieties whose patch colouration must adhere to strict symmetrical criteria to rank highly in the competition.

Ryukin: Elegance in Form

Ryukin goldfish are instantly identifiable by their compact, rounded bodies and a prominent pronounced dorsal hump rising directly behind the head.

Notable specimens captured in our photography:

  • Red-and-White Ryukin: A staple of Asian selective breeding, boasting long, flowing tail fins.

  • Calico Ryukin: Striking fish that combine sculptural body shaping with intricate, dappled multi-coloured patterning.

What Makes a Goldfish a Champion?

Beyond breed variety, the Guangzhou judges evaluated swimming fluidity, balanced proportions between fins and body, and colour vibrancy. Seeing these premium specimens in person makes it clear that the high-end goldfish market rivals the luxury sectors of rare coral and premium marine fish collecting in prestige and value.
